Production and commercialization of Gorgonzola

OUR STORY

Caseificio Gelmini

The company was originally composed of two factories: the first one in Besate, handling milk processing and production still nowadays; the second one in Novara, managing the ageing process of all cheese forms before their selection, packaging and shipping.

In 2004, the Gelmini creamery was equipped with a cutting-edge structure in the maturing of Gorgonzola DOP cheese, thanks to the inauguration of the new ageing warehouse in Besate and the pre-existing production plant (opened in 1997).

EARLY 1900s

Foundation

The Gelmini family begins its story as milk artisans in the area of Milan nearby the Ticino river, producing the typical local cheeses such as the renowned Gorgonzola and the delicious Taleggio.

1955

The Farmhouse in Besate

Giuseppe Gelmini purchases a farmhouse in Besate, a town on the banks of the river Ticino surrounded by once navigable canals. Here, he starts the production of the renowned Gorgonzola DOP, which would become the beating heart of Gelmini dairy production.

1970

Industrial development

Gelmini Carlo officially enters the production management of the activity, launching a phase of industrial development that will mark a significant chapter in the company’s history.

1977

Cheesemaking department

The company takes an important step forward with the transfer from the town’s headquarters to the new structure in via Papa Giovanni XXIII in Besate, inaugurating new offices and the opening of the new cheesemaking department.

2004

A new warehouse

The company expands with the opening of the new maturing warehouse production department of Besate. The Gelmini creamery has thus equipped itself with a cutting-edge structure in the ageing of Gorgonzola DOP.

2011

Marco e Chiara Gelmini

Children of the historic founder Carlo Gelmini, they take over the lead of the company by carrying on the family tradition with dedication and passion.

2016

Modernization of the Production process

An important phase of improvement and modernization happens in the production department. New designs, cutting-edge technologies and air circulation and local cooling systems are introduced to ensure even more efficient and high-quality production.
